What is SBA? The Spina Bifida Association is the national voluntary health agency working for people with Spina Bifida and their families through education, advocacy, research and service. They are committed to securing a better life for those who live with spina bifida and to prevent the birth defect in future generations. With YOUR help, we will join together to achieve this goal through advocacy, education, public awareness and research.
History SBA was founded in 1973 to address the needs of the Spina Bifida community and today serves as the representative of 60 chapters serving over 100 communities nationwide. With its national office located in Washington, DC, the Association is the only national organization solely dedicated to advocating on behalf of the Spina Bifida community.
What is Spina Bifida? Spina Bifida is the most common permanently disabling birth condition - affecting one of out every 1,000 live births - in the United States and affects 70,000 men, women, adolescents and children across the nation. Those with this challenging birth defect are living longer, more productive lives than was dreamed of just 20 years ago.
Individuals born with Spina Bifida are also commonly born with a condition called Hydrocephalus (though babies can be born with Hydrocephalus and not have Spina Bifida.) For that reason, Spina Bifida is not just one condition; it is a multitude of conditions that affect the mind, the body and the spirit. No two cases of Spina Bifida are ever the same. Fortunately, new worlds have opened for people with Spina Bifida due to advancements in treatment and prevention. Those with this challenging birth defect are living longer, more productive lives than was dreamed of just 20 years ago.
